Day 1 – Tirana to Shkodër

Your adventure starts in Tirana, Albania’s colorful and chaotic capital. Pick up a rental car (small SUVs or 4W cars are best for the mountain roads) and head north to Shkodër, one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. The road is smooth, and traffic thins out once you leave Tirana. The drive takes you through small towns, farmland, and glimpses of rivers. Keep an eye out for roadside stalls selling cherries, strawberries, and honey in June—perfect for a snack stop.

What to see:

• Mat River Valley – On the way to Shkoder, pull over at one of the bridges to see turquoise water winding between rocky cliffs.

• Rozafa Castle – Medieval Fort with a legend: locals will tell you the story of Rozafa, a young woman sacrificed by being walled alive into the fortress so it would stand strong. Even today, parts of the walls seem to “weep” with moisture, said to be her milk feeding her newborn child. Beest time to Visit is in the afternoon, to enjoy the sunset colours of the panoramic view. Day 2 – Shkodër to Theth: The Alpine Meadows
